It was another day in woodworking paradise.....the scroll saw was humming today as I made several of the wooden furry friends in Ambrosia Maple and Cherry. The day was feeling like a success. If you're a woodworker, you may recognize that feeling - when the blades are sharp, cuts are smooth, the wood is the perfect thickness, and all is right in the world. And then enter.....the golden retriever, Luna.
Luna loves the wood workshop. She loves to run in and explore and grab a piece of scrap wood. She's a retriever after all and happiest when she has something to retrieve and carry around. Or the "Retriever Parade" when she prances back and forth with her treasure waiting for us to admire and usually take away her prize. Today I missed the parade. I carried the wooden furry friends into the house and left them on the dining room table planning to wax them after I returned from dinner with friends. But Luna happened before my return. I imagine she had the Retriever Parade and with no audience she became bored and reduced the furry friends cut-outs to scrap. The furry friends were furry no more. They were reduced to splinters. The hard joyous work was reduced to broken pieces. And in the background, Luna waited for a reaction--what could I do?--it was my fault for leaving the pieces in reach of a large dog.
I looked at Luna and asked, "What did you do?" As if she would answer. All the while her tail wagging back and forth. I imagined her answer, "Loved the furry friends like you do - now go make more!" And so back to workshop I go. Completion of the wooden furry friends was so close........... --Donette
