Bowl - Spalted Maple

This hand-turned spalted maple bowl is a wonderful example of what happens when nature becomes part of the design. Dramatic dark lines wander throughout the warm golden maple, creating intricate patterns that continue around the exterior and across the inside of the bowl. No two views are quite the same.

Spalting is a natural process that creates the distinctive dark lines and color variations in the wood. Because heavily spalted wood can become softer as this process develops, the wood used for this bowl was stabilized with a wood hardener to add strength and durability before being turned. This allowed the beautiful character of the wood to be preserved while creating a more substantial finished piece. 

The simple, gently rounded form was intentionally kept understated, allowing the extraordinary figure of the wood to take center stage. Look closely and you'll find sweeping lines, small knots, patches of color, and almost map-like patterns created entirely by nature.
