Two pieces of Maple burl—each with its own color, grain, and personality—come together in this truly one-of-a-kind lidded Maple burl bowl.
The bowl is turned from richly colored Maple burl with warm amber and reddish-brown tones and an incredible concentration of swirling eyes, knots, and figured grain. Its smooth, rounded form provides a beautiful contrast to the lid, which was created from a different Maple burl cap and intentionally retains its dramatic natural surface.
Lighter in color than the bowl below, the burl-cap lid is wonderfully rugged and sculptural, with peaks, valleys, natural inclusions, and textures preserved much as they appeared on the original tree. A hand-turned exotic hardwood finial provides the finishing touch, its deep color creating a striking accent against the golden tones of the burl cap.
Although the bowl and lid did not originate from the same burl, that's part of what makes this piece so interesting. The contrasting colors and textures allow two very different expressions of Maple burl to complement one another—the smooth, highly figured wood of the bowl below and the untamed natural beauty of the burl cap above.
Perfect for holding small treasures or simply displayed as a piece of functional wood art, this is a piece meant to be explored from every angle—and one that could never be duplicated.
